Nikita Gill: Biography

Early Life

Nikita Gill was born in Belfast, England and raised in New Delhi, India. Nikita was inspired to become a writer while still in grade school. Her English teacher noticed her exceptional talent and, according to Nikita, “told me never to stop” and she never has.

Her poetry is described as “brown feminist awesomeness.” It draws frequent comparisons to contemporary peers such as Rupi Kaur, Iain S. Thomas, Amanda Lovelace, Lang Leav, and Bianca Sparacino.

Instagram and Online Fame

Nikita Gill has carved out a niche for herself as one of the world’s most prominent online poets. Her emotional and philosophical encouragement is so immediately relatable that she has gained over one million Tumblr followers and a quarter million Instagram followers. Her poems are shared everywhere, and her fame spread so wide that Khloe Kardashian once posted one of her poems without giving her credit. In prose essays for Thought Catalog such as “Love A Soft Person,” her articles have gained immense popularity with a global audience.

Despite her massive success, Nikita remains humble: “I’m just someone who likes to create poems and post them to my blog and Instagram so that someone, somewhere, might read them and realize they are not alone…I mean, my objective when I write is just to be able to relate to people, to empathize with their pain, to let them know they are not alone in the world.”

Your Soul Is A River and Other Books

She says her 2016 bestselling poetry collection for Thought Catalog, Your Soul Is A River, is “all about dealing with trauma and sadness, growing from loss and sad experiences, closure and the value of your soul and life’s most beautiful gifts—love, nature, the cosmos, and what they can teach you about yourself.” Her newest book, Wild Embers, is described as “an explosion of femininity, empowerment, and personal growth.”

With her unmatched ability to crystallize her feelings into poems, Nikita’s writing expands and matures with every new book, each new poem a shining star in an already glimmering constellation.
