The word “ceramics” tends to conjure up sentimental memories coated in a thick layer of sweet nostalgia. Founded by Amanda Shine, The Setting NYC is a line of ceramics that aim to bring that heavy feeling of care, personal attention, and dedication back into a practice that’s been diluted by mass production. Shine hand makes her entire collection in her SoHo, NY studio—and that includes this quaint white and brown speckled Saline Bowl, which bears the ridged imprints of Shine’s careful labor. With the hopes of forging an experience between their customers and their products, The Setting NYC will also customize any of their ceramics to the customer’s liking. Among the offerings are hand painted personal messages on the ceramics, gift wrapping, or even delivering the piece with a little goody inside—thoughtfully arranged flowers inside a vase, perhaps, or even a smudge stick of sage. With 5% of every sale donated to city harvest and their work to fight hunger in New York City, The Setting NYC makes a pretty indisputable case for quality over quantity.
