Men Explain Things to Me is a hallmark book from Rebecca Solnit, the esteemed writer, historian, and activist. Solnit is a feminist icon, and this book has quickly become a touchstone of the modern feminist movement. It’s a collection of 7 essays, the lead essay of which spawned a term you’re probably now familiar with: “mansplaining,” meaning, when a man feels the need to explain something to a woman in a patronizing and condescending way, even regarding topics that the woman knows more about than the man. (Been there!) Other essay topics include the metaphors of Virginia Woolf, and the sexual harassment suffered by female protesters in the Arab spring. Solnit, as usual, is both enlightening and incredibly funny; her dry wit is an essential part of her power.
